Birth and Early Life
Inetimi Alfred Odon a.k.a, “Timaya” was born on the 15th of August, 1980 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He is the last child of 15 children and funnily, the most successful of them all. Timaya’s father was a banker while his mother was a petty trader. Timaya obtained his primary (basic) education at the Assemblies of God Primary School before proceeding to Nkpolu Secondary School, all in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Later on, he and two of his other siblings were moved by his mother to Lagos state, Nigeria. It was in Lagos and at Ikeja Grammar School that he continued and completed his secondary school education.
Timaya later returned to Port Harcourt where he got admission to study Banking and Finance at the University of Port Harcourt but couldn’t complete the programme. He is said to have dropped out after his first semester. Pundits argue that he has no brains for books. How far that is true is laughable.
From Partnership to Solo Artist
Timaya upon leaving the University of Port Harcourt, returned to Lagos where he joined hiphop artist, Eedris Abdulkareem as his backup vocalist. Timaya later left Eedris after three years of working with him, to become a solo career. That is how he met with producer K-solo, who helped him produce his debut album, “True Story”.
The Inspiration For “Dem Mama”
Timaya said in a 2013 interview that the track, “Dem Mama” from his debut album, “True Story” is a reflection of what happened at his community, Odi, a river side community in Niger Delta where several lives were lost in 1999.
According to the artist, officers and men of the Nigeria Army were at the time hunting down militants which they alleged killed about eight policemen. In the retaliation, as the artist recounts, the soldiers burnt down the village, killing many people in the process.
Years later, he decided to bravely tackle the issue from a music standpoint which boldness won him instant street credibility. That was how the track “Dem Mama” was born and became successful. This encouraged him to work even harder, the fruit of which was the release of seven more songs in his first album titled, “True Story” which was released in the year 2007, produced by K-solo.
Other Albums Since Then
In 2008, the Timaya releases his second album titled, “Gift and grace” and won two awards which were the Nigerian Music Video Awards and The Headies Award.
Timaya released his third studio album, “De Rebirth” in 2010. This was equally successful on of which hit tracks was, “Plantain Boy”. He equally earned a few awards from this album.
This particular song, just like others which epitomizes his “grass to grace” experience is a story of how he sold plantains while growing up as a child plus other menial jobs which he had to do in order to survive. It is a kind of encouragement to people in similar low wrung of life to comfort themselves and hope for a better tomorrow.
In 2011, Timaya released his fourth album, “LLNP Long Life N Prosperity”. It was equally successful.
The fifth album by Timaya is his 14-track hit album titled “Upgrade” which was released on the 25th of June, 2012. Some of the hit singles from that album include “Malonogede”, “Bum Bum”, and “Sexy ladies”. Epiphany is Timaya’s sixth and most recent album released in 2014.
