D’Banj Biography And Net Worth, Endorsement and Awards

His full names are Oyedapo Daniel Oyebanjo but he is better known as “D’Banj”. He is a Nigerian music superstar from Ogun state, who rose to international stardom and is still making waves in the entertainment industry, home and abroad. D’banj (a.k.a., The Koko Master) is a gifted singer, stage performer, songwriter, TV personality, and entrepreneur. He is doubted one of Nigeria’s most highly rated and most successful musicians with strings of endorsement deals, investments, and wealth to his name.

In this review, I shall be looking briefly at the life history (biography), achievement, and estimated net worth of this Nigerian music heavyweight whose pattern of music has a sharp rebalance with that of his role model, the legendary “Fela Kuti”.

Birth and Early Life

Dbanj was born to a military officer father and a business tycoon mother on 9 June, 1980 in Zaria Northern Nigeria. Due to the instabilities which is akin to the military career, the family had to constantly relocate around the country till they got to England.


D’Banj has his early education (primary/secondary) in military schools before calling it quits 3 years later. It is at the Navy Secondary School, Abeokuta that the Koko Master rounded up his secondary school education. Afterwards, the University of Lagos, Lagos State gave him admission to do a course in mechanical engineering. Because of the incessant strikes that characterize public tertiary education in Nigeria, he had to quit and move to the UK. Along the line he met Don Jazzy who helped ignite his passion for music once more.

D’Banj had always had a thing for music and began playing the Harmonica quite early. This (harmonica) was gifted to him by his late elder brother, Femi who was quite instrumental to his music career. Femi, his brother was 17 when he died in a plane crash together with his family. The harmonica is symbolic to D’Banj’s music career – he plays it more often than any other music instruments in his music audios and videos.

Moving From UK to Nigeria

D’Banj and Don Jazzy met in London where he (Don Jazzy) was learning music production. While in London, D’Banj had worked as a Mai guard, hanging around studios at times. In 2004, the duo returned to Nigeria at which time the Nigerian music industry was very fertile. That was the year he released  the single titled, “Tongolo” which made significant success.

Music Career (Record Labels)

D’Banj got signed on to Mo’Hits records in 2005 with his first lead single “Tongolo” and other songs. “No Long Thing” which was released sometime in 2005 is the Koko Master’s debut album was. Over time, the “No Long Thing”, would be used as a political campaign theme for one of Nigeria’s political party’s rally. In 2006, he dropped another album, “Rundown Funk U Up” which popular single was “why me”

In the years that followed, D’Banj dropped other successful albums like the “The Entertainer” and “Bother You”. With time, the artist established his own record label, “DB records”, which signed on Kayswitch (D’Banj’s younger brother) and Tonto Dike (Nollywood’s controversial actress). In 2011, D’banj’s record label, “DB Records” did a collaborated with Kanye West’s “GOOD MUSIC” record label. The aftermath of this collaboration has been to a large extent, very juicy and rewarding.

International Performances, Collaboration and Records

D’Banj has been a phenomenal artist and entrepreneur. The R&B, Afropop and Pop superstar has performed on local and international stages notable among which are the Jay-Z and Rihanna headlined the Hackney Weekend to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics (on 23 June 2012), and the 2013 African Cup of Nations closing ceremony in South Africa.

Also, D’Banj has worked with top American music superstars like Snoop dogg where he remixed the track, “Mr Endowed”. He has also done a remix of the track, “Scapegoat” with Kanye West in his London koko concert. Some of the many other international arts The Koko Master has collaborated with include Tinie Tempah, Fally ipupa, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Akon, etc.

Most of D’banj’s tracks are hit tracks. One of the many hit tracks in D’banj’s list of songs is “Oliver Twist”. In 2012, the video from the track got about hit 20million views, hence becoming the first in Africa music video to get such an viewership. For many days, it topped the UK singles chart of that year, 2012. Nigeria has produced a lot of ambassadors but not a United Nation Ambassador for peace. D’ Banj is the first Nigerian to achieve that status.

Foremost amongst this is with his endorsement deal with “Power Fist”, an energy drink company, kudos to his, “Tongolo” track of 2004. He got this endorsement deal in the year 2004. He is also a Glo brand ambassador (worth N100 million), an ambassador of the Bank of Industry (BoI), Ciroc Nigeria, Sony Music Africa, the world bank, Slot, UAC food, and many other top companies. In 2014, Apple/Beats By Dre have the Koko Master a juicy endorsement deal which price worth is undisclosed.

Aside from being the owner of five studio albums till date, D’banj is a serial entrepreneur with investments in the agriculture and telecommunications industry – “Koko Mobile”. Currently, D’Banj charges between N2million to N4million per show.

D’ banj’s main sources of wealth are Music, Entertainment, entrepreneurship which has brought him an arguably net worth of roughly $6,000,000.00. T.IN magazine reports that the legendary R&B, Afropop and Pop superstar is Nigeria’s richest solo musician. He is arguably among the top 20 richest musicians in Nigeria.
