Anthony Nwakaeme was born on the 21st of March 1989 in Lagos, Nigeria, the last child out of five children. He started his footballing career on the streets like most of the young boys in Nigeria. Anthony started playing amateur football in Ajegunle, Lagos. His first amateur club was at Sao Paolo FC in Ajegunle. According to the player, he was a very prolific goal scorer while playing for Sao Paolo, scoring match-winning goals and cup-winning goals.

After playing for Sao Paolo of Ajegunle, Nwakaeme moved to Patros of Tolu, Lagos. It was at Patros of Tolu that his dream to become a professional footballer seemed to have been accomplished. Afterwards, he moved to Denmark to continue his football development with Vejle Football academy. However, his dream was cut short with the dissolving of the football club and Anthony had to return to Lagos.
Again, Europe came calling on the doors of Anthony after his return from Denmark, and he moved to Sweden to join his brother, Dickson Nwakaeme who was playing for Aalborg Bk at the time, to play professional football but yet again his journey was cut short and he had to return back to Nigeria. Anthony continued his life in Nigeria and continued playing football on the streets of Lagos, but after some time, he found himself in Europe again this time in Italy where he met Materazzi of Inter Milan father who introduced Anthony to a coach in Romania.
From Lagos to Universitatea Cluj, Ariesul Turda, then Universitatea Cluj
After going to Romania, he signed with Romanian club Universitatea Cluj in 2010, but he was immediately loaned out to a club, Ariesul Turda, in the second division as he was considered not good enough for the first division. After strings of eye catching performances for Ariesul Turda in the second division, scoring 5 goals in just 8 appearances for the club, he returned back to Universitatea Cluj. Between when he was called back to Universitateta Cluj from Ariestul Turda to 2012 when he left Cluj, he played 37 games for the club in first division and scored 8 goals.
From Universitateta cluj to Petrolul Ploiesti
After leaving Universitateta cluj in 2012, Anthony had a failed stint with Petrolul Ploiesti, another football club in Romania; he played three times for the club and did not score any goal for the club. Anthony returned back to Cluj during the winter transfer window in 2013, but he also found his playing chances limited at the club once again. He played ten times and scored twice for Cluj. It was after this season that he moved to Israel.
From Petrolul Ploiesti to Hapoel Ra’anana
Anthony signed for Hapoel Ra’anana based in Ra’anana on the 13th of August, 2013 during the summer transfer window. He made his debut for the club in the Israeli premier league on the 31st of August 2013 in a 1-1 stalemate in which he scored his first goal for the club. He played 30 times for Hapoel Ra’anana during the 2013-2014 football season in which he scored 6 goals. He also made two appearances in the league and he scored once. The following season, he made 25 appearances for the club and scored 7 times. In the league cup and Israeli cup, he made 5 appearances that season without scoring a single goal.
From Ra’anana to Hapoel Be’er Sheva
At the end of the new season, Hapoel Be’er Sheva moved to sign Anthony from Ra’anana and on the 25th of June 2015, Hapoel Be’er Sheva signed Anthony. He was given a four years contract. He scored his first goal for Be’er Sheva on the 3rd of October 2015. This, also, was a landmark goal as it was the first goal to be scored at Be’er Sheva’s new completed turf. During the 2015-2016 season, Anthony played 34 times in the league and he scored 11 goals and he added two more goals in the cup from 4 matches. Anthony led Hapoel Be’er Sheva to its first main national competition in 40 years. He came 5th in the scorers chart for that season.
The following season; 2016-2017 season, Hapoel Be’er Sheva defended its title alongside National team mate John Ogu and Israeli strikers Ben Sahar and Elyaniv Barda. He finished joint third highest goal scorer alongside team mate Ben Sahar and Itay Scheter of Beitar Jerusalem with 14 goals. That season proved his most productive season in his career in front of goal as he scored 1 more in cup competition and two in the Europa league, thus scoring 19 goals in total in 49 appearances and he also led Hapoel Be’er Sheva to Toto cup triumph that season.
Also, during the 2016-2017 season, Anthony won the best player award in Israel. In his last season for Hapoel Be’er Sheva, he scored 10 goals in the league, he scored 5 goals in 11 appearances un UEFA champions league and Europa league. In total, he made 95 appearances and scored 35 goals for Hapoel Be’er Sheva between 2015 and 2018.
From Hapoel Be’er Sheva to Trabzonspor
When the 2018-2019 football season began, Anthony signed for Turkish side, Trabzonspor, where his international team mate and former Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi play on a two year deal. After Hapoel Be’er Sheva failed to qualify to the group stage of the UEFA champions league, Anthony left Israel. Anthony has played twice for Trabzonspor and he has scored twice there.
Anthony was first invited to the Super Eagles of Nigeria team in October, 2017 for the 2018 world cup qualifying match against Cameroon and Zambia. However, he did not make an appearance until a month later. Anthony made his debut for the super eagles during the 2018 world cup qualifying match against Algeria which ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Anthony is currently valued at 1.5 million Euros. He is currently reported to be earning an annual salary of 800,000 Euros with Trabzonspor. Anthony is a single guy, who is still not ready for a relationship but he is focusing on his career. His mother lived with him in Israel. He loves listening to 2baba’s music and Ajegunle songs.
